The Nazi Bear

Germany, 1948. The Nazi bear. As I understand it, this character was used in the PR campaign during World War II.

  1. Whose PR campaign? The Germans? If so, the war ended in 1945.

  2. I’m aware of that.

As soon as I find an official link I will post it. I was hoping some of my overseas friends could help with more information.

I know you asked me about this today and I said I had no clue…but what’s interesting is that the Bear is still the symbol in Germany – specifically Berlin. I think it was probably a symbol used prior to the War, but maybe died out for a bit afterwards as a result of being used to build nationalism/patriotism/loyalty during the Nazi days. The Bear is probably a sign for Berlin and Germany…which was still used under the Nazi party. In other words, I’m not so sure it’s a symbol of Nazi propaganda as it is German pride. Just an idea…

  4. Jessica: What I heard is that it was used during the Wehrmacht era (1935 – 1945). However, since I can’t find something official, your idea sounds a lot more likely.

Well, it was just an idea. ..so don’t give me that much credit just yet. There is no factual basis to anything I just said except the bear being a symbol of Berlin.
