9/11 & Islam

Sad, but true, for many Americans.

  1. A very typical American response, choose ignorance,

Another example of “ignorance is bliss” – how sad

It’s not just about choosing ignorance, it’s also about simplifying a complex act into an equation that is easy for them to understand, both intellectually and emotionally. Islam = 9/11 (Terrorism). They’re not only choosing ignorance of Islam, but they’re more importantly refusing to acknowledge the complexities and difficulties that fundamentalism presents to our society. They are incapable of approaching ideas in a nuanced way. If they acknowledge that it’s not just Islam, it opens them up to ideas that threaten their view of the world or their moral certainty – no one has taught them how to do it, or prepared them to face ideas that may cause them to question “truths” that they’ve known their entire lives.

I think it’s evidence of the greater failure of our country’s educational system to encourage thought and dialog above all else.

Or maybe I’m making a whole lot out of a bumper sticker.

I couldn’t agree with this more. The same way people do not fight for the injustices in our generation as they have in any other generation. We’ve found a comfort zone or become ignorant to the facts and our surroundings. We’re more focused on what crash diet to start or what celebrity is going to jail than educating ourselves on matters of substance. We don’t fight for causes anymore, we create the need for more causes.
